This exhibition includes masterworks and multiples by a number of contemporary artists recognized for their superb abilities in the realm of graphic works. Multiple Impressions features artists known for their ability to push the boundaries of printmaking with fresh vision and a keen sense of exploration. From the exquisite drypoint etchings of Vija Celmins to aquatints of Robert Mangold and the lithographs of Ellsworth Kelly, this exhibition presents printmaking at its finest. The blockbuster lineup of exceptional printmakers features legendary icons of the art world such Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, Vija Celmins, and Richard Serra as well as mid-career artists including New York based Polly Apfelbaum and Jennifer Steinkamp in addition to Brazilian artists Sandra Cinto and Beatriz Milhazes.
With decades of printmaking experience, Jasper Johns is considered a master within the field. His tremendous contributions to the field of printmaking were recognized with a mid-career retrospective of his prints at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Now in his 80s, Johns remains among the most influential printmakers in the contemporary art world. This exhibition showcases two exquisite intaglio prints, Within from 2007 and Untitled 2011.
Working on a single plate for months and sometimes years, painter Vija Celmins is one of the art world’s most celebrated printmakers. In 2002, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York organized a survey of Celmin’s masterful graphic works which included the Untitled (web 3) on view in this exhibition. Similarly recognized for creating groundbreaking graphic works is the noted abstract painter Brice Marden. Marden’s etching and lithograph Beyond Eagles Mere, 2000 is on view and represents the artist’s intriguing organic line abstractions.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is the monumental Purple Dahlia by Brazilian Beatriz Milhazes. Employing a variety of complicated techniques, the artist layers woodblock and screenprint to elicit an explosion of color, form, and texture. Equally dynamic in movement and color are the archival pigment works by video artist Jennifer Steinkamp. Botanic 4 Still Frame 4 & 12 capture the mesmerizing moment of Steinkamp’s hypnotic organically based video installations.
