Dallas—Talley Dunn Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition of new paintings by Houston-based artist Francesca Fuchs entitled Xmas Trees. The show opens with a reception for the artist on Saturday, November 21st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and will be on view November 6th through December 19th. Francesca will give a brief talk about her work on Saturday, November 21st at 6:00 p.m. as the opening reception begins.
In these new mid-sized paintings, Francesca Fuchs presents Christmas trees, painted with the artist’s subdued palette. Each tree, seen from the same vantage point, is a specimen, drawn from photographs of Christmas trees past, both her own and from others’ images. Together, they document the yearly ritual of installing an odd piece of temporary furniture and individualizing it with applied decor.
In Fuchs’ tree paintings repetition and individuality compete, not only in the appearances of the trees, but also in the range of feelings that they evoke about holidays and families—of happiness, melancholy, awkwardness, or even indifference.
Born in Germany, Francesca Fuchs currently lives and works in Houston, Texas. After studying with Tony Cragg at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Fuchs was named a Core Artist in Residence at the Glassell School, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and later won the Hunting Art Prize in 2006. In 2012, the artist was named one of ten finalists for the Artadia Awards, Houston. Fuchs’ artwork has been featured in one-person exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; Diverseworks, Houston; the Fayerweather Gallery at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; and The Surburban in Oak Park, Illinois. The artist’s paintings have also been included in important group exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Arthouse, Austin; the Gallery at the University of San Antonio; the Dallas Contemporary Arts Center; the Galveston Art Center, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
