The Estate of Joseph Glasco
East End Echoes 

Talley Dunn Gallery is honored to announce the recent opening of Joseph Glasco: East End Echoes at the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center, a federally designated National Historic Landmark dedicated to preserving the legacies of Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock. The one-person exhibition of works by Joseph Glasco highlights his late abstract paintings.

Joseph Glasco (1925-1996) was born in Oklahoma and grew up in East Texas, before moving to New York in 1949. As a young artist newly arrived in the city, he studied at the Art Students League and defined a distinctive style of figural painting and sculpture. Glasco quickly became a key participant in the city’s literary and artistic circles, spending time with Alfonso Ossorio, Ted Dragon, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Clement Greenberg. In 1952, MoMA curator Dorothy C. Miller invited Glasco to participate in the ground breaking exhibition 15 Americans, which also included Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Clyfford Still.

For this exhibition, curator Marti Mayo highlights Glasco’s later works of gestural abstraction. Mayo further explores Glasco’s close relationship and friendship with Julian Schnabel, as well as the connections between the bold allover compositions of Glasco’s later works and the artist’s formative years spent with Ossorio, Krasner, Pollock, and other abstract expressionists. Works by Glasco can be found in the permanent collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
