Exploring Etching with Arely Morales and Richie Peña of Familia Printshop

Join us for a special conversation between artist Arely Morales and Executive Director and Master Printer Richie Peña from Familia Printshop, a printmaking publishing house and community printshop in Dallas, TX. Familia Printshop seeks to build community and culture through print workshops and provides community space for printmakers and artists interested in learning or exploring various printmaking processes. Morales and Peña will discuss the artist’s recent collaboration with Familia Printshop, various print processes and more.

About Arely Morales

Born in Mexico, Arely Morales moved to Nacogdoches, TX at the age of 14. Morales received her BFA in Painting and Photography from Stephen F Austin State University in 2015 and later received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington in 2017. Her work focuses on issues of identity, humanity and invisibility of the Latino immigrant community in the United States. Morales is a 2019 recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and her work has been featured in many group and solo exhibitions including Soy de Tejas: A Statewide Survey of Latinx Art, Centro de Artes, San Antonio, Texas; The United States and Mexico: A Powerful Past, A Shared Future; U.S. Embassy, Mexico City; Día de los Muertos — A Time to Grieve and Remember, National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago, Illinois; and One by One, Art League Houston. Morales’ work will is also included in the 2024 Women to Watch exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
 
About Richie Peña
 

Richie Peña currently lives in Dallas, Texas where he runs and operates Familia Printshop, DFW’s local publishing and community printshop dedicated to collaborating with artists and educating the community about printmaking. Peña also is an adjunct professor at University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, where he teaches Beginning Relief and Beginning Screenprint since Spring 2024. 

Peña received his M.A. and M.F.A. from the University of Dallas, Irving, Texas, in printmaking, 2020. In 2017, he graduated with his B.F.A. in studio art at the University of Texas Permian Basin where Peña studied primarily printmaking courses. 

His experience with visiting artists and printing their works from both Universities led him to discover his love for collaborating and publishing prints. In spring of 2021, began interning at a Flatbed Center for Contemporary Printmaking which eventually he became Lead Printer in Etching and Relief. Peña collaborated and worked on projects with Ben Muñoz, Lance Letscher, Adrian Armstrong, James Sullivan, Connie Arismend, Miguel Aragón, David Everett, Kyle Hawley, Maricela Sanchez, Linda Ridgway, and Melissa Miller. 

Since becoming a part of Familia Printshop in Spring 2023, Richie has collaborated and published prints for Michael Reeder, Anna Redman, Mariell Guzman, and Arely Morales.
