Talley Dunn Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Painting and Sculpture, an exhibition of new work by celebrated Dallas-based artist David Bates. David Bates: Painting and Sculpture will open with a reception on Saturday April 5th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and continue through Saturday, May 24th.
Continuing his exploration into the possibilities of still-life, Bates’ recent paintings feature a more restricted palette of gray and black with small touches of color. Painted on a large scale, these works present lively compositions of fall leaves and pine branches with less emphasis on exact detail and more interest in showing the artist’s process and study of form. A series of four owl paintings present different approaches to depicting the same subject, some that highlight pictorial flatness and rich pattern and others that suggest depth of field within the picture plane. The exhibition also features a trio of reclining female nudes and two abstracted hand sculptures cast into bronze.
A native of Dallas, David Bates is recognized as one of Texas’ most acclaimed artists, and his artwork is currently featured in a joint retrospective exhibition organized by the Nasher Sculpture Center and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, on view through May 11, 2014. The artist attended Southern Methodist University and earned a B.F.A. in 1975 followed by an M.F.A. in 1978. Shortly after completing graduate school, Bates’ paintings were included in several important group exhibitions that travelled to museums around the country, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.
In 1987, Bates’ work was included in the prestigious Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and in 1988, Bates was honored with a traveling exhibition organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. His paintings and sculpture have been acquired by major museums across the country, including the Dallas Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington; Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden, Lincoln, Nebraska, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C., El Paso Museum of Art, El Paso, Texas, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
